Challenge: Effective Employee Orientation

Employee orientation is one of the first touch points an organization has with their employees. It sets the tone of corporate culture and communicates important information to the employee about benefits, expectations, safety procedures and much more.

When a diverse employee population exist with Limited English Proficiency (LEP), providing orientation in English-only hinders both the employee’s comprehension and can negatively impact a company’s liability. Furthermore, it doesn’t foster a culture of inclusiveness and diversity.

A Chicago based warehouse club, acknowledged the need for a reliable and experienced language services company that could facilitate an employee orientation.

Metaphrasis was contacted and provided the details of the employee orientation. It was relayed that this location had an Arabic-speaking employee that would be attending orientation and the organization wanted to ensure the employee and management team was comfortable and accurately comprehended the information provided.

The corporation has strict safety policies that employees have to follow. Therefore, they wanted to ensure that the employee understood all of the food safety regulations that were in place.

Our interpreter provided services for both management and employee during the safety assessment and orientation. Because of Metaphrasis’ model of ensuring that Everyone Deserves to Be Understood, Metaphrasis took the time to speak with the client to find out what the objectives were for the encounter, what the encounter subject matter was, amongst other details so, that the most qualified and experienced interpreter was assigned to ensure the best service outcome.

The interpreting session was successful as we also understood that culture and context was important. At the end of the session, all of the stakeholders were pleased with the service and were confident that the facilitation of the communication utilizing a qualified Metaphrasis interpreter rendered the best opportunity for a clear, concise and productive employee orientation.
